European landscapes

They say a picture paints a thousand words, so we've set out to discover what photography might be able to tell us about today's Europe and are pleased to announce the winners of our January / February competition.

We had a good feeling about the topic for this edition of Europe Through a Lens and were not far wrong. Our readers responded imaginatively to the theme "European landscapes", showing the continent in all of its natural glory. With entries ranging from verdant valleys and rolling hills to desolate, wind-swept scenes, the judges faced their toughest challenge yet in deciding which photo should claim top honours.

In the end, though, it was Junyuan Chen, a Chinese photographer and winner of the competition back in November last year, whose image The lonely tree was awarded first place. Junyuan, who lives in Glasgow, captured the shot in the late afternoon at Loch Lomand, just in time for the last light of the day. He believes that the centrepiece of his prize-winning composition is probably the most photographed tree in Scotland. You can find more of Junyuan's work on his Flickr account.

Two photographs, both taken by 19-year-old Andrew Ho, were tied in second place.  Come fly with me was commended in particular for the definition of the mountains in the background, while Welcome to Hogwarts won praise for it vibrant colour contrasts. Andrew has been with us before, having claimed second place in December with his take on the theme "Illuminated Europe".

Third place went to competition new-comer James Sutton for Clouded Summer. The image particularly impressed the judges because of its eerie, brooding mood and the way the wind can almost be felt moving the grass. James, who studied photography at the University of Central Lancashire, lives and works in Greater Manchester.

Many congratulations to the three winners and a big thank you everyone who took part. But don't worry if you missed the competition deadline; Europe Through a Lens will be back with a new theme for March / April very soon!

Editorial

If the Editorial team had an actual office it would have to stretch from the corner of Britain to the edges of Spain, Sweden, Germany and beyond. (With frequent trips to America too) .  The term 'from the editorial office' then, is very much a figure of speech.
