Want to meet the E&M team, have fun and discover your personal Europe? Now you have a chance to do so: in December, we'll be running a workshop in Berlin. But you need to apply in the next few days: the deadline is the 26th of September. For more details or to apply, click here. We're especially still looking for applicants from the UK, Poland and Spain!
The title of the workshop is "Do you speak European?", and we'll be spending a week answering that question. Each day will have a theme, like European literature or European cooking. We hope that by the end of the week, we will have put together a treasury of videos, photos and statements - not to mention recipes! - which will explore different ways of understanding everyday life in our various corners of the continent.
After our last workshop, many of the articles created were published, and some of the participants went on to become writers or even editors at E&M magazine. So apply now, and make E&M your project!

This project is financed with support from the European Union through the program YOUTH IN ACTION. The content of this project does not necessarily reflect the views of the European Union or the national agency JUGEND für Europa and they cannot be held responsible for them.
How well did they handle the Libya crisis? Who really has power in the EU? Do young Europeans even care about European foreign policy? Answer these questions and join E&M in this amazing opportunity to make your voice heard!
The German Foreign Office (Auswärtiges Amt) is hosting a conference: "Berliner Forum Außenpolitik" on November 29th, to celebrate its 60th anniversary. They have asked E&M and the Körber Foundation to help them involve young Europeans in this celebration.
We have made a bet with a prominent European politician that we can find 10,000 young European to fill in a survey on European Foreign Policy. To win, we need 10,000 people to fill in an online survey, just 17 questions, about European foreign policy, which is now online at E&M at www.europeandme.eu/survey.
If we achieve our goal by November 1st, we will have won the bet and the politician must specifically make your views heard through a speech about the results of the survey and meet representatives from Young Europeans across the continent. In other words, this is a great opportunity for you to raise your voice and be heard! By the end of this bet, we will hopefully have shown that young Europeans care about European foreign policy and that we are a force to be reckoned with. With your help, we're sure we can succeed!
Lets WIN THIS BET!

ISSUE 13 is coming! To celebrate our 3 year anniversary we've got a great issue lined up for you. Yes, E&M is 3 years old: bigger, better, and more European! Here's what the 1st of July has in store for you....
BRAIN - As the euro zone seems to be on the verge of collapse, we look back at the rise and fall of the Hanseatic League. From the 13th-17th century it was one of the most successful European alliances in history.
HEART - Are young Europeans likely to burn out in a paranoid struggle against the fear of losing their jobs? Who still wants to save the world? And what happened to the famous 'Spaßgesellschaft', the youngsters who lived for a life of parties and a nice, carefree life? Six young people tell us about their visions for the future.
DIAPHRAGM - France, 1895. A cinema is filled with fear, adrenaline, and the pumping of blood as spectators sit down to see their very first moving picture... We discover how European film rose to glory!
BABY - Following on from last issue's focus on Skype sex, we continue looking at sex and the internet with a great article on gay online dating.
LEGS - Want to apply for a Postgraduate degree? Don't even consider it before you read our essential guide to taking on the 'Master's odyssey' including interviews with students from Oxford University, UK & Lund University, Sweden.
And that's just the lead articles.... So come and celebrate E&M's third birthday from the 1st of July!!

As part of the Charlemagne Prize, yours truly received an invitation to meet the UK jury that had picked and sent us to Aachen for the final round. So, for a few hours, we decided to put on suits and leave behind the bohemian life of a E&M editor, to be introduced to members of the European Parliament.
To celebrate our Britishness, we decided to kickstart the day with a hearty breakfast at Regency Cafe, 17-19 Regency Street. Unlike what the name might suggest, the place is truly down to earth. Breakfast comes in the flavours of "Omelette & Chips", "Ham Bagel & Chips", and "Sausage, Beans, Tomatoes and Chips", you get the idea. And it is actually really yummy!

Lucy Duggan, editor and co-founder of E&M, was in Aachen this week where E&M was awarded the Charlemagne Youth Prize. She relives her two defining snapshots for us.
I
I'm nervous. The main hall at the Technical University in Aachen is filling with people, the award ceremony of the Charlemagne Youth Prize is soon going to start.
The other national winners - one from each EU country - are taking their seats beside me. None of us can remember (or pronounce) each other's names, so we call each other by the names of our countries, as in, "Hey Italy, do you know the way back to the hostel?" or "Where's Estonia gone?" But actually, this system of nicknames is rather deceptive: the "Irish" representative comes from Latvia, the "Danish" winner is Armenian and the "French" nominee comes from Romania but lives in the Netherlands.
We can happily announce that E&M has won the European Charlemagne Youth Prize 2011!
The Prize
The Charlemagne Youth Prize is organised by the European Parliament and the Foundation of the International Charlemagne Prize of Aachen and is awarded for projects that foster a shared sense of European identity and integration among young people. The award comes with a prize of €5000.
The first prize was awarded by European Parliament President Jerzy Buzek to two of our editors (and co-founders) Christopher Wratil and Lucy Duggan at a ceremony in Aachen this morning. Presenting the award Mr. Buzek described E&M as "extremely original" and felt that "the main message... is that Europe is, can, and should be 'cool'." Collecting the Prize Christopher Wratil said "like many young people we live in Europe, and that is what the magazine stands for." Whilst Lucy Duggan reflected on how the project emerged, saying that "we were fed up with the perception that Europe is just the EU and ends somewhere behind Slovenia."
E&M is the first project from the UK to win the European Charlemagne Youth Prize. Every country nominates one project ("national winner") that then gets invited to Aachen, Germany, for the European final prize. Second prize went to the Greek project '"Balkans Beyond Borders" and third prize to the Spanish "Escena Erasmus Project."
E&M: The Project
E&M is an online lifestyle magazine created by young Europeans for young Europeans in 2007. Its motto is to "make Europe personal", because Europe is often identified only with politics and bureaucracy. Today, E&M is a platform that allows people to take the initiative, develop themselves and find like-minded individuals from across the continent. They approach Europe from a transnational perspective with authors and readers in over 20 different countries.
We would like to thank the European Charlemagne committee for awarding us this great honour, as well as the UK committee for selecting us to be the UK representative for the second year in a row.
We must also thank the hundreds of dedicated authors, editors, and partners who have helped us to reach out to the whole of Europe like never before! And of course, most of all we would like to thank our readers for continually inspiring us with fantastic stories from across the continent. It's your input and interest that helps us carry on exploring, writing, and sharing the many examples of how wonderfully diverse, amazing and interconnected Europe really is!

DIAPHRAGM - When you read about some of the scientific studies carried out in Europe, you can't help but think: what the hell were they thinking? We present the most hilarious research, from bat fellatio to zipper-entrapped penises.
BABY- Who wants Skype sex? After this lead article... We think you will!
LEGS - Why would a young law graduate or an economist decide to teach socially deprived children for two years? We check out Teach First.
